New Year, New Team: Why January is Prime Time for Executive Hires in Finance

Share:

It’s a bit of a cliche to say that the New Year is a good time to start a new job, but it’s a cliche for a reason. A recent survey by HR firm Michael Page found more than half of respondents saying January represents the ideal time to take a step forward on your career path.

There are also practical reasons for ramping up hiring efforts in January, especially for hiring finance executives. New budgets start in the new year, opening up the purse strings for filling major positions. People also take less time off in January because they’ve just come out of the holiday season.  If hiring a new finance executive is put off until spring or summer, people are more likely to be on vacation, which delays an executive hiring process.

Finally, there’s a very simple reason why January is prime time for executive hires and finance: money. Most companies pay annual bonuses in December. Executives thinking about making a move are very motivated to stick around through the holidays and collect that cash.

If your company is looking to take advantage of this yearly opportunity to hire an executive, there are a few simple things you could be doing to grease the wheels and increase your ability to bring in a top finance executive. Consider the following best practices.

Bolster Your Brand

Not to be confused with your company’s brand in the marketplace, your brand as an employer goes a long way to bringing in top talent. The best part about building an employer brand is that it doesn’t cost a lot of money.

Make sure that your official website and social media profiles do a good job of communicating company values, workplace culture, and day-to-day life. Profile your employees and executives on your social media pages. Post content related to any charity work your company did during the holiday season and professionally appropriate pictures of office celebrations. If major industry events or conferences are coming in the new year, post about those to show your company is engaged in the industry.

Network

Networking is critical to filling any position. Your executive team should be active in their communications with people in their professional network. They should also lean into participation in any professional associations.

Reach out to former candidates to see if they might have an interest in your executive position. While cold calling these candidates may not directly lead to a hire, they can act as a type of networking that turns up leads, or at least builds word of mouth for your open position.

Use LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a great way to engage people in your network with minimal effort. Actively post with your company profile and encourage your executive team to do the same. Consider reaching out to close connections regarding your open position. Regular engagement increases your visibility on LinkedIn and it helps to boost your employer brand.
